Frost Giant earns giant upset in Suburban

Just days after finding out he will get a 15-day suspension after one of horses tested for an overage of clenbuterol in Kentucky, the controversial and outspoken trainer Richard Dutrow pulled off a huge upset in the $400,000 Suburban Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park with Frost Giant.
The five-year-old son of Giant's Causeway, who came into the race with two wins in eight starts since arriving in the U.S. set the early fractions, gave up the lead in the stretch and battled back gamely to prevail by a half length, returning $82.00 for the win.
Frost Giant is owned by IEAH Stable, Andrew Cohen and Pegasus Holding Company, and was ridden to victory by Rudy Rodriguez, his first Grade 1 win in his career.
"I'll be all right now," Dutrow said of the Suburban win. "This gets me back in the game."
It was a tough beat for runner up Solar Flare, who gave up the lead inside the final furlong under jockey Gabriel Saez, who had a tough day. The jockey finished second in the Mother Goose Stakes (G1) and was disqualified to third for interference in the stretch aboard heavy favorite Proud Spell.
Rodriguez, who came into the race with just six wins at the current meeting, works many of Dutrow's horses in the mornings.
"I get on him in the morning, and he has really been different lately," Rodriguez said. "We've had him a few years, but he seems to have a new attitude. He was scratched on Wednesday, and that looks like it turned out to be a good thing. I was able to learn a lot about him. I was very happy Mr. Dutrow kept me on this horse. It was not an easy race, but he ran great."
The $2 exacta returned $265.50 and the trifecta with Rising Moon landing third paid $2,620.00 on a $2 ticket.
The favorite in the race was A.P. Arrow, who appeared to finally have found a spot where he could pick up an elusive Grade 1 win.
The six year old was making his first start since a fourth in the Dubai World Cup (G1). Prado had the six-year-old far back early and he never responded, checking in a dull sixth.
Mother Goose No Fairy Tale for Saez: Proud Spell came into Saturday's $237,000 Mother Goose Stakes (G1) as the prohibitive favorite but had a tough trip in the four horse field, with many questioning the strategy of the young jockey Gabriel Saez.
Proud Spell stumbled coming out of the gate, came up the inside and was forced to check when she ran out of room at the quarter pole. She was taken off the rail by Saez and veered out sharply bothering Never Retreat in the stretch.
By the time Proud Spell got going in the stretch Music Note was home free, the second choice returning $5.30 for the win.
The winner was ridden by Javier Castellano and trained by Saeed bin Suroor for Godolphin Racing.
After a stewards inquiry, Proud Spell was disqualified for interfering with Never Retreat ands was relegated to third.
The $2 exacta returned $36.40 and the place payoffs ballooned, Music Note paying $11.60 to place and Never Retreat returning $20.00. There was no show betting.
