Sailor's Cap Dominates Colonial Turf Cup

advertisement

(Monday, June 23) When the skies opened up in New Kent, Va. on Saturday, trainer James Toner must have been thanking Mother Nature for the monsoon conditions as post time for the $600,000 Colonial Turf Cup (G3) approached.

His three year old colt Sailor's Cap had beaten first level allowance runners over yielding turf at Keeneland and then missed winning the Grade 3 American Turf over similar footing in his most recent start.

Sailor's Cap showed his affinity for the soft footing again, dominating his nine rivals, drawing clear to win by 6 ¾ lengths.

The colt returned $9.20 as the lukewarm favorite. Alan Garcia was the winning jockey for owner Team Valor.

The Colonial Turf Cup is the first leg of the Jacobs Investments Grand Slam of Grass, which offers $5 million if a horse sweeps the four races.

The second leg is the $750,000 Virginia Derby (G1) on July 19, followed by the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes (G2) at Arlington Park August 9. The final leg is the $3 million Emirates Airline Breeder's Cup Turf (G1).

Nistle's Crunch chased the pacesetter Kentucky Bear, took over the lead approaching the quarter pole but was no match for the winner, settling for the runner up spot.

The exacta returned $47.80.

Your Round, the longest price on the board at 56/1 rallied from far out of it to land third, the trifecta returning $1,141.60.

The winner stopped the timer for the 1 3/16 miles in 2:04.42 over the soft turf, a far cry from the track record, which is 1:52.98, set by Showing Up in 2006.

The rain started about 90 minutes before post time for the feature, complete with thunder and lightning, causing a slight delay in the race. The final race on the card was canceled due to the inclement weather and the condition of the turf course.

Lady Digby was an impressive winner in the $188,000 All Along Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3) in the race preceding the Colonial Turf Cup.

Trained by Graham Motion and ridden by Jeremy Rose, the filly returned $10.20 as the third choice in the race.

French bred Eclisse opened up a clear lead and held on for second in the All Along, completing a $65.00 exacta.

The favorite was Rutherienne, who made a mild late run to finish third, completing a $197.60 trifecta.

In other stakes on the Colonial card, Smart and Fancy hopped at the start but recovered nicely and made a six wide run to capture the $60,000 Buckland Stakes by four lengths with Edgar Prado aboard.

Trained by Tony Dutrow, the mare returned $5.20 as the favorite.

Midwatch kicked off the stakes action with a victory in the $35,000 Old Nelson Handicap. The Rodney Jenkins trainee was ridden by Javier Castellano and returned $20.00.
