Lightning should climb in NHL future odds

A number of NHL players found new homes on Tuesday, as the window opened on the opportunity to make free-agent signings and many teams made some key moves.

In the Western Conference, the big movers on Tuesday were the Chicago Blackhawks who upgraded on the blueline by spending a ton of cash on the top defenseman available, Brian Campbell. Chicago also improved in goal by signing Cristobal Huet.

The Red Wings also made a splash by re-signing defenseman Brad Stuart and Andreas Lilja to shore up their defensive corps for another run at the Stanley Cup. Detroit also snatched up netminder Ty Conklin to fill the void left by the retirement of Dominik Hasek.

Before Tuesday's signings, the Blackhawks were a 35/1 long shot on the Stanley Cup odds at , while the Red Wings were a 5/1 favorite.

Teams in the Eastern Conference were much busier on Tuesday, especially New Jersey which brought back a couple of former Devils. Returning to New Jersey are Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik, who were part of past Devils' Stanley Cup-winning squads.

The Devils also opened up their wallet to re-sign Jay Pandolfo and Bryce Salvador. Before their flurry of moves the Devils were a 20/1 Cup underdog at .

The Devils' divisional rivals, the New York Rangers, were busy on Tuesday re-signing defenseman Michal Rozsival and they also gave him a new blueline partner by signing free agent Wade Redden. The Rangers were at 12/1 on the odds list before Tuesday's moves.

However, the busiest team in the league was the Tampa Bay Lightning, who continued to restock the cupboard for new head coach Barry Melrose. Tampa Bay already signed Vaclav Prospal earlier in the week and on Tuesday they signed former Penguins Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts, as well as Radim Vrbata who had a breakout year in Phoenix last season.

The Lightning also added a veteran presence in goal with the signing of Olaf Kolzig. Look for Tampa Bay's 40/1 Cup odds at to improve after their recent acquisitions.

That was just a taste of the deals signed on Tuesday and it's likely just the beginning, with a number of big names still available including Mats Sundin, Jaromir Jagr and Marian Hossa.
